I have to disagree with language purity. I'm going to school for linguistics. If language was pure, we'd be speaking Old English right now. But regardless, languages change like people. Gay no longer means happy. Happy used to mean fortunate. Dick was the Old English word for penis, which was later conceived as vulgar because the Latin term, penis was preffered (since Greek and Latin were considered higher languages). Cunt was also the proper term for vagina centuries in the pass, like shit, piss, and even fuck. But words and concepts do change. Now I think sometimes taxonomy is too complex, but it is what it is.

I would prefer German derived words if I had the ability to be understood - I mean - nobody will understand me if I refer to Japan as Dawnland though, or China as Middlerike, or The United States as the Banded Folkdoms of Americksland or simply Americksland. Latin and Greek don't fit into English grammar well - Latin has declensions and conjugations that just don't make it into English properly. Knowing some of both Japanese and Chinese, I will tell you right away the difference is markedly different in how they treat foreign words - Japanese has a tendency to take English words and import them, while Chinese constructs its own. so when I do write Japanese, I tend to use Sino derived vocabularly simply because a lot of the loan words sound jarringly different from native words.

I just appreciate languages for what they are. I use terms that can't quite describe something in English, Naturally, I draw from French and German, but Italian and Russian do well too

So let me get this straight. You don't tolerate persons who identify as genderfluid or non-binary, on the grounds that it changes society, and according to your posts, the way you speak and its effects on language? But see, here's the thing -- the really funny part is, YOU DON'T HAVE TO INTERACT WITH THESE PEOPLE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM. Yes, really. Not at all, not one bit. I'm quite sure that given your disposition, these people wouldn't want to interact with you either. You're complaining that you'd have to refer to whoever as 'they'? Why not just NOT talk to the people in question; then you'd never even HAVE to refer to them. I'm a straight male by the way, so I have zero personal investment in this topic. I just think it's ridiculous that people can go off the rail so much on something that doesn't even affect them.

I disagree with you on the Gay doesn't mean happy anymore Darkhorse. Ginseng I don't believe that you can 100% avoid interacting with "these people" as you put it and sometimes you have to choice but to talk/refer to them in a conversation. An example would be that someone else brings them up and say....it's something revolving around your job or a school paper or something. Yes it is possible to say "no" but quite possibly not without some serious repercussions on your part.

It doesn't send me into a rage but some of the terms introduced to Facebook last year irked me because some of them overlap and/or encompass each other. It's illogical and illogical things are annoying. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014/02/heres-a-list-of-58-gender-options-for-facebook-users/ Example of same definition - an·dro·gyne /ˈandrəˌjīn/ noun: androgyne; plural noun: androgynes an androgynous individual. • a hermaphrodite. an·drog·y·nous /anˈdräjənəs/ adjective: androgynous partly male and partly female in appearance; of indeterminate sex. • dated having the physical characteristics of both sexes; hermaphrodite ----------------and just to add to the chaos they throw in this term: "Two-spirited" or "two-spirit" usually indicates a Native person who feels their body simultaneously manifests both a masculine and a feminine spirit, or a different balance of masculine and feminine characteristics than usually seen in masculine men and feminine women. Example of overlapping Neutrois is a non-binary gender identity which is considered to be a neutral or null gender. It may also be used to mean genderless Agender is an identity under the nonbinary and transgender umbrella terms. Agender individuals find that they have no gender identity, although some define this more as having a gender identity that is neutral. ----and look at this mess Cis terms: Cis Cisgender Cis Female Cis Male Cis Man Cis Woman Cisgender Female Cisgender Male Cisgender Man Cisgender Woman My thoughts are someone wanted to make a name for themselves and Facebook wanted a pat on the back. What a bunch of assholes.

@animekid You're right. But let's say, like you said, that you can't avoid the situation so you say yes. All you're doing is talking about certain people, right? I'm talking about personal life though; you choose your friends, and you can choose to ignore those that aren't. You're definitely right, sometimes things like career will force you into those situations. But if you're employed, you have a certain level of professionalism that you have to commit to, and to put yourself where you might not be comfortable. What I mean to say is, it just really shouldn't be that big of a deal. Who cares?

On the level of professionalism, you can always just ask. Say I have a person picking up a prescription at the pharmacy I might say, "Oh Ms. Jones, I do have a prescription for you. Is it ok if I call you Ms. Jones?" They'll answer yes or no and I can ask what they'd like to be called and then modify it from there. I've yet to have a patient get offended and it doesn't really cost me anything. The same thing is true if you want to write a publication, just used terms like genderfluid individuals or whatever. It's a decent point, but I find that people tend to not get offended if you go about things in a nonjudgemental kind of way.

Ginseng I fully believe isolation of it is not the key to fixing this. Its to have these people understand that no, we're not going to bend society around them. That's it. We have two totally different views on how to handle problems. The best way to handle issues, for me, are to actually get involved and state your side. If you read back to the start of the topic I tried being nice-ish and then people came in hit and run driveby like. This topic isn't about trans people. I have no issue with them as long as they're willing to actually treat their dysphoria - transgenderism is defined by dysphoria. If you're not dysphoric, you're not. And all dysphoric people I've met want hormones and surgery. All of them. And that's a lot I've met.
