Hitler/ Colored People/ Political Correctness. >.<

rinatanchu
The connotation of the term "colored people" holds ties to the past, during the time of the civil rights movement, that is why it is politically incorrect to say it when referring to blacks. People will say, "People of Color" but that refers to everyone who isn't white including Latinos, Asians, Arab, etc. How exactly have you been "viewing past American racism"? Maybe she things you are spoiled because you haven't had to deal with racism, personally. I am Mexican, but most people think I am white and in the types of neighborhood and schools I have lived in and been to, I haven't experienced racism like my family has in the past. Like being threatened to move out of the neighborhood and have the whole community sign a petition or to be hit by teachers till you star bleeding because you are speaking in Spanish. With that said, I am pretty spoiled, too. Freedom of Speech does not mean people have to listen to you or understand what you say. It means you won't be persecuted (killed or imprisoned) for saying something which we are very lucky to have this compared to many other countries. If you feel that your education is at risk because of the way you are treated during class though, I would talk with your teacher. Let her know what you told us and ask her "Why do you think I am spoiled? How can I understand? What can I do?" To answer your question:"Do you think we've taken political correctness too far?" I am not sure how we can take it too far. Being pc depends on context. For example, saying Hitler was the last great conqueror makes it sound like what you think he did was a good thing. It obviously wasn't good because he killed a lot of innocent people, who were mostly minorities like Jews, Romanians, the mentally and physically disables, and gay men. He also an Aryan Supremacist. Anyone, especially of a minority race, would disagree because his ideas have no place for them. He practically brainwashed the entire nation of Germany to become nationalist. By the way, racism is usually a stereotype so if you say you are not attracted to someone because they are a certain race, that is racists because you are saying you are not attracted to an entire group of people because of qualities you think are found in every single person of that race.

The PC crap has gone out of control, it is important to treat others with dignity and respect. I usually do not bring up race unless it is specific to the topic. People are people. I had a cool professor for one of my English Lit classes. He warned everyone he was not PC and threw out quite a few phrases that would make some twinge and would swear on rare occasion. He said words have power. In it's simplest form, that power is given by consent or outrage.

@ Rina, with regard to your last comment regarding excluding the possibility of being attracted to an entire ethnicity , I do not see how that is racist at all. If most of the black women I encounter in the U.S are unattractive to me, why is it not logical to conclude "well, the majority of the black American (u.s.a) women I've encountered don't cut it, I'm not attracted to them." Should that person have to give every black American woman a chance before saying that definitiveness? Personally, I am not at all attracted to black women in U.S.A. In Brasil, I love African descent women, same goes for Africa. & Objectively as in I've read all the Du bois stuff, Garvey, Malcom, those freedom riders, yadada. I've always felt the black race as a whole to be the most disadvantaged, and so I sympthasize with them. So, it pisses me off how some woman I do not know calls me spoiled because I'm not black. Which I am sure was the reason, to be frank. + Idk if you are from the U.S, but most people would agree "people of color" has historically connoted blacks over here, other wise I wouldn't be called brown. + That is what I mean. He was the last great conquerer, I am not saying he did great things, but he was certaintly a great leader, and I do admire his ambition. Was it misplaced? Of course, but great ambition nonetheless. Now, if I say that in public many people would think I'm a Nazi symphathizer, even after having explained myself as I just did. That's what I mean by political correctness going too far (i.e., double-talk proliferation, freedom of speech)

Just because I don't have much time right now, I just wanna say I am from the U.S., California to exact and people do say people of color and say POC for short. It is even on hair products and lots of organizations that use that term. Again, being PC is relative. Not everyone is going to agree with you. And yes, you should give every black women a chance because what if that black woman like you? Edit: I am not saying you should or should not be racist. I am just saying what is racist.

As for the Hitler thing, if you explained yourself like you did just now to people, you would still be attacked but that is the kind of thing you would have to accept. You have to accept that your words will not be heard in a biased setting. However, I understand what you are saying. that is why I wanted to hear more. And that has nothing to do with being PC. has everything to do with human nature.

^^ I mean it's not I wouldn't give her a chance outright if she piqued my interest, I just (generally) am not attracted to black American women sexually due to recurring character traits, etc. Just like how I'm not really attracted to Barbie types.
