Regardless of the reasoning behind this if any these kinds of sick/twisted/terribly sad things happen far too often, especially nowadays :(

I don't think it's so much more common as more easily widely known instantly. The world has no more wars, famine, death or disease than before, we just happen to be able to hear about the things the average person couldn't before...anyways... Issues like these seem to always be placed on something other than the true culprits. It seems to me that you always hear how great these kids where and how surprised everyone was when these things happen. Now, I know you can't always predict who is going to do what, but I honestly think just by having more involved parents that you'll significantly lower the rate of things like this from happening. I know there are many that are just mentally ill, but ill or not, with proper supervision and guidance I think these issues may just be prevented a little better. I fully understand the variables are so vast as to why a parent can't always supervise, but I believe that there are many more time when one can yet chooses not to. Even the simple act of eating dinners together as a family and discussing your day can make a world of difference.

This seems to me to be a twisted escapist fantasy. (They said something about running away to Slenderman's mansion in the woods). The violence suggests that the perps were themselves the victims of some sort of emotional or physical abuse/trauma and that they felt a subconscious desire to express that pain to someone (supposed to be a friend) who they felt was either weak, or innocent or somehow responsible for their pain. That is my theory. Bottling up emotional pain and then explosively releasing it through violence on someone is just a fucked up way to express our own pain if we feel unable to express it in words or other healthy ways.

Has anybody else noticed how about 80-90% of what is reported in the news nowadays is about terrible things instead of happy or good things? Wow I mean not even neutral things.

I think most of the good things that happen in the world are considered unimportant to report to the world. I personally beleive there is as much good in the world as there is evil.

Balance is good, sadly it seems there is almost more evil than good :( and sadly I kind of agree with you that people feel its "less important" to report good/happy things than terrible and shock value things :(

Unfortunately tragedy is more entertaining than boring happy shit. People have an intrinsic desire to be maximumly stimulated by emotional events to ease the dull boredom of everyday life and the shock of tragedy is the most effective. It's why there are often predictions of apocalypse. It's not that people believe the world will suddenly end, it's that people want the world to end, whether on a conscience level or sub consciencely.
zombiephoenix
I think that also the predictions of the world ending can be our way of fulfilling the curiosity of when will the world end.

I don't think people really want the world to end or see kids killing kids. This stuff as vampire said, just eases the doldrum called life. Most live a pretty non exciting and mundane existence after all. I feel that showing this stuff all the time tends to create copy cats who are just crying for attention while not understanding the consequences of their actions. It almost romantisizes violence in a morbid sense. For instance, how do you feel about Bonnie and Clyde or Billy the kid? They're almost seen as some sort of anti hero vigilante, when they were straight up terrorists.
