so what got you into anime

jmac525
I loved Toonami when I was younger with Dragon Ball Z, Gundamn Wing, Outlaw Star and stuff like that. I lost interest around 2008. However, as I looked for new interests my freshman of college, I got back into anime by watching Deadman Wonderland and Future Diary. It went on from then.

I guess bits of it were always there growing up but my first real fascination was probably Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid by Toei Animation. Uploaded in various places now like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POUPd0mCgOs Later on (about ages 10-14) I got to see Sailor Moon, Escaflowne, Shinzo, Monster Rancher, Bubblegum Crisis etc until they stopped airing them.

It's bit of a long story with me, so I'll try and keep it short. Growing up, my cousin was really into Sailor Moon. Me, on the other hand, didn't really see the appeal in anime. Then I got into Pokemon, then YuGiOh, but by no means would I have considered myself really into anime. As I got older, I got into DBZ, but dropped off due to too much filler, than in high school, got really into Naruto, but stopped when I left to join the US Army. Even then, I still wouldn't consider that I was into anime at that point. Fast forward to my medical discharge due to injury, and I figured that given that I had a lot of Army buddies who were REALLY into anime when I was in the army, I figured I'd brush off one of my old issues of Newtype Magazine and check out some anime in there. Well, my first anime that I deliberately watched was a somewhat obscure slice-of-life romantic comedy called Kimikiss: Pure Rouge. Once the series was over and a tear or two was shed, I was left with a longing for much more anime. But what really turned me from just a casual fan to an outright anime FREAK was when I first saw the anime Black Lagoon. Ever since, I've been an outcast and ostracized for being a nerd and an otaku, but honestly, if I had to give up being a nerd and otaku for people to treat me like a person, I'd rather be an outcast. I love anime as a medium too much. Anyways, that's the short description of it all.

Once upon a time, there was a little child in elementary school which loved drawing, has always been into her fantasy world and loved to think herself into books, cartoons and movies. It happened to be, that this little girl randomly stumbled into loving Animes while zapping from channel to channel on TV, when she was allowed to watch some hours. The little girl aged six absolutely loved what she’s seen and started to get interested in it. Well, the first thing I’ve seen was probably Sailor Moon, but it could have been Pokemon too. I’m not quite sure. I just remember that I started to dress up like Sailor Moon and played Sailor Moon a lot. Later then I collected Pokemon Trading Cards and swapped with some guys in my neighbourhood. Soon I got into Dragonball/DragonballZ, where I collected stickers from, and Digimon. When I was seven or eight I had my first “Cosplays” though I didn’t know it were a cosplay. I just dressed up as Agumon and Pikachu at Fasching celebration in school. I then started to watch Mila Superstar and Kickers in the morning before school, I always got up so damn early back then, that it was no problem. When I was about the age of ten, I started to watch Beyblade then, I bought Beyblades, my first Anime Magazine and put up Anime posters on my wall. And that’s how it continued and my interest in Manga/Anime grew and it became a huge part of my life. Of course the Animes and Mangas I was interested in changed from age to age, but I’ve always been into it. Basically I was the girl who read Mangas in the breaks at school and drew Manga Picutres on and into my exercise books. That was one other reason for the pupil and teachers in school to think I’m weird, but I never cared much about it. Now that I’m an adult I’m still crazy about Mangas and Animes, though I read more mature Mangas. I think I’ll always be an Otaku and I’m pretty proud of being one :)

cardcaptor sakura as my first love. then Cowboy bebop. Paranoia agent was simply amazing. From there inuyasha with my ex. My other ex got me into bleach and naruto subbed. (Be for it was popular in america and edited like mad.) Then getbackers, FLCL, Airhead and .hack//sign. From there, I moved to shojo. Chobits, Fruits basket, as well as others. Shin-chan was hysterical, and for some reason, I loved super milk chan. Since then, I've been out of the anime loop. I heard about some good animes, but havnt watched any.

My dad, brother, and I went to the video store one day and rented The Slayers 1st season. After that we rented other animes that were there at the time, in 97 or 98 i think, and have been watching anime ever since.

It all started when a saw an episode of DBZ for the first time on cartoon network. I was I think 12 or 13 at the time and I was like "What is this?! this is awesome!" and with that I was hooked. I had never had cable growing up until that time... so there was quite a lot I did not know about but the toonami block soon became an after school ritual for me.

I grew up in Asia...so I was exposed to Anime for as long as I can remember. To me it was normal. Not as popular in the States, at least when I initially moved lol.

I saw an AMV, then decided to watch the show :)
