Have people been put into boxes?

magnus_orion
Ok, for a long time now I've been having this thought that with some changes in the structure of the internet (making it more personalized), have caused the internet to become a sort of feedback loop, that reinforces opinions by putting out what an algorithm thinks you'd most like, which is based on what other people who are like you like, which reinforces the media you consume, the opinions you hear, etc. And in my opinion this has created a bunch of "attractors" that separate society into a handful of niche categories that are reinforced and held in place by the media they consume and are fed by these algorithms. I think before this, the internet was more unifying, when everyone got the same information, I felt like things were less divisive, but maybe my perceptions were just colored by my inexperience. thoughts?

yeah. Basically exactly that. This guy could have stolen the thoughts from my head. Except while he says it creates a "web of one" I think it just separates society into a bunch of niche groups and cliques.

In that respect i think it honestly depends on the person. If you have an open mind, and try lots of different things that isn't going to put you in a box. Trying lots of things, and trying to prove what you believe is wrong, is the way i do things. Instead of trying to prove it right. Everyone can prove a thing right in that sense, but if you cannot prove that thing wrong then it's something you should truly value, and believe in. Anyways the point i am trying to make is the web is only a tool no matter how you look at it. Tools can be negative, or postive in any regard, it just depends on the person, and how they use it.

@ magnus_orion I agree with your opinion epsecially now it seem society separated into a bunch of niche groups and cliques it seem to be the same way with all media now e.g. tv, books, radio however I also agree with @Spencer view it how we use the web I have just learned this it basic is about using it in a positive and not negative way.
