Persona 3 really hits home for me and pretty much always stays at my #1. But Lisa the Painful RPG is honestly one of the best examples of contemporary indie game story writing.

Mass effect series

Greatest RPG eh? That is a serious tough one. I've been around long enough to play many legendary ones. Instead I'll name a few of these. Final Fantasy Tactics. One of the greatest tactical RPGs ever made. Suikoden (Series but especially 2) A very unique series with many notable parts, such as the 108 stars of destiny, cook offs and other mini games. Skyrim. The game itself is good but what really made the game shine was the mods made by the community. I think that's enough for now. I can go on and on.

Dark Souls 1. (Witcher 3 close second.) But Dark Souls 1, beats it with sentimental value, and overall the best gameplay. https://thumbs.gfycat.com/FluidHappyBoutu-max-1mb.gif

Old school, but Pokémon Crystal. Fire Emblem Awakebing is close.

I don't want to make a list containing a billion RPGs, but one that really stuck with me since my childhood and that I want to raise awareness for since nobody ever really heard of it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AyLqjUMpq8 Amazing music, plays like a visual novel with a well implemented tactical battle system, and yet it's a western RPG.

Legend of Dragoon. An unparalleled experience, even to this day. Despite its mechanics, it is fun to play, the story and lore is immense and the music. THE FREAKING MUSIC! It's...amazing.

You know what Oneman, I agree. It definitely deserves legendary status. I'm not sure what you mean by the mechanics were bad. I think the timing system was sheer genius. Nothing beats "Madness Hero!"

@waycuotaku I was meaning by more of a comparative status between modern games with fancy mechanics versus legend of dragoon w/PS1 mechanics. I actually really like the mechanics, but I was simply playing Devil's Advocate as to why some wouldn't like it. I liked that you had to be focused and pay attention to what you were doing. I enjoyed the fact you had to understand the timing (and depending upon the attack sequence, the button variations. Ugh, the difficulty) I loved the fact that the only time you were casually enjoying it was with the cutscenes. Even then, you didn't want to look away from the game. It was a mesmerizing game with incredible world building, a cool antihero in Lloyd (who singlehandedly made Lloyd my favorite male name of all time and Meru made Meru one of my favorite female names), a satisfying and difficult final boss in Melbu Frahma. IMO it is the BEST game ever. Period. While that may be up for debate, it makes a pretty solid case for itself.

I see. Thanks for the clarification. It is indeed a great game. :)
