I took Japanese in middle school for two years and retained most of the phrases and cultural kinks up until now. At one point, I was fluent enough to come out of my shell at a Japanese market and converse with the woman who was giving away samples of some delicious tofu sauce. :3 We bought like five containers off her.

Folks gotta remember its hard to learn the language including some phrases or words in Japanese is kinda hard to explain in english so you basically gotta have a summed up version of it.

I'm studying it for the second year, so far listening to subbed animes, doramas, vocaloid songs and reading visual novels was what helped me the most. Manga has been useful every now and then. I think I'm good at understanding the listening comprehension due to that. Reading things with kanjis on them helps me to remember for a longer ammount of time.

I'm on my second semester of Japanese. The things I've had the most trouble with are particles and kanji XD I plan on becoming fluent with it during my high school career and going on to learn other languages in later years :3

Right now taking lessons thru LiveMocha, but also just thru anime and such. Plus luckily, I have a friend I met while playing WoW a few years ago, who lives in China, but she is fluent in Japanese also, so we have begun chatting off and on to help me learn faster, plus I help her with English. :)
