Genetic diseases and DNA modification.

yaasshat
"If I could of been fixed before I was born that would of changed my life completely." Ah, but to what degree? You might then ask if you'd be loved any less had they not and why you're loved now? Not to mention the very slippery slope towards "designer children" . Then comes the question of who would it be available to? Just the ultra rich or the common folk aka those who couldn't afford it without insurance? Working towards cures for diseases is always a good thing, but changing the very make-up of what makes us, us, that's a complicated, very tricky, icy and oiled up slope. I'd be all for it, but there'd have to be a ton of limitations put in place concerning modification outside of curing or helping stave off the effects of hereditary diseases.

On domestic social media where curious ppl gather, most ppl are against genetical modification. One reason is that the technology isn't mature enough.

well of course more tests need to be run on animals first and when the technology is presented im sure there will be some mistakes, but as is the nature of progression

those are some unfortunate faces this slipper slope concept i think is a silly thing to fear thats why we have laws will people break those laws and make pretty babies? sure. but those genes for a pretty face are now inbeded in there DNA, so theyll have pretty kids and so on idk how prettier people is a downside in Fire Punch ~(spoilahs if you havent read it)~ humans have already gotten use to altering DNA, and have altered said dna to give people esper like powers, like regeneration. It was just normal for them. and would that be so bad? to make it so humans in this world are born with a higher quality of life at the expense of people using it to alter the appearance of their children is a risk id happily accept the base line of this idea is a higher quality of life for humans if you or your wife were pregnant with a baby and were told something is wrong with the fetus, but you could make it so the baby is normal, would you take that offer??

but those positive traits are some we would keep, no? and im not speaking on that level of gen manipulation. i'm more on the baseline of correcting congenital defects. anything farther, like creating "the perfect human" is a lil too dodgy for me to aline myself with

@sail, i dont think "they have an innocents" is enough of a reason to let your child be born with it. it's a type of retardation. my mother worked in a day school for people with mental retardation and i helped her often after school as it was close by, and yes, they are happy, they would be happier if they had the intellect of someone their age they would get upset and sad. they knew they were different and it made them sad and frustrated. not to mention they had to have support from their parents or other familiar members into old age, which is a strain on the families. imagine being a child forever and being forever and not never being able to understand certain things. never being to experience the things you could because you were an adult. yes, some of the adults in the school were self sufficient, one even riding his bike to the school and ran errands on his own, but not all of them were as well off. we had people in that school who were in their 80's, still learning addition. literally, we would print off the same worksheets for them every week because they didnt remember they had already done them. and they WOULD be frustrated and angry with themselves when they couldnt do it, couldnt do the same sheet that had seen so many weeks prior, and its heartbreaking. most people with down syndrome are sterile, and will never have kids let alone marry. plus the societal stigma and bullying. bottom line they arent completely ignorant, they know their different and it hurts them. sorry for the spurge, i just have a lot to say on this specific topic.
