I believe most forums and pretty much any type of website with a post voting system restrict free expression and independent thought white perpetuate hive mind mentalities. People become so concerned for their reputation and instigating mob wrath that they go with the flow and mindlessly agree with with whatever the consensus is without questioning anything. Meanwhile you have those that are fearful that they might be banned due to unreasonable staff who ban based on subjective opinions rather than objective evidence of wrong doing. Then you have some sites that automatically ban you for getting too many down votes on a post, which can easily happen on any disagreeable or truly unpopular opinion. I don't just mean controversial topics neither, This can just as easily apply to showing negative opinions on a popular piece of media or some sort of trending fad.
