Nah, the best is definitely cosplaying at conventions- there's just such an exciting vibe being around all these people that love anime as much as you do. I wish I could cosplay Haji from Blood +, but I don't have a Saya.

Haha! I cosplayed L in school once (it's hard to sit in a desk like that, lol). Also, I did that weird photo shoot with the Death Note. I've always wanted to do a really good cosplay to a convention though (probably A-Kon). Are there not a lot of anime fans in your town? I've been lucky to always have a group of otaku to hang out with in all my schools.
