As so other anime suggestions, have you seen 'Denpa teki na Kanojo'?
It's a really good psychological-type show that consists of two 40 min OVAs: 'A Fool's Choice' & 'Happiness Game'.
I particularly loved the second one. Its storyline is unpredictable like O.Henry's novels.

Spooky thing is, most of the main characters are among those 256 people...
(yes it's my guess, but there are many details that hint on this.) So those people are definitely not 'dead' in a traditional sense.
Also, Tesla is 'secretly' mentioned in more than one place^ For example, the scene in the ED looks like a depiction of the Tesla's Tower to me--
