@siruboo
They do receive military pay but there's a bunch of different factors. You get higher pay for rank, higher pay if you are active duty or not, years of service, etc. They also give housing allowances or subsidies.

Anything received after you get out is retirement or disability due to service. You have to serve 20 years or more to get the retirement/military pension.

I think removing the college incentive for joining the military would be good. Because as it stands the military is in this back and forth of we need more people, then we have too many get rid of them. Its because they spend all this money training people up only to have them leave after 4 years. If people wanted to join for a more noble cause you wouldnt have to worry about retainability. But i guess other factors sort of play into this as well. Such as poor leadership, you really get some bad leaders who get in a position over people and abuse it and thats why people typically leave. While deployed i had a dude overseeing our group who went out of his way to make everyone miserable. Oh youbhave to carry 50 lbs of equipment about 30 feet? Sucks to suck you cant use the trucks to drive it up on the side walk even if you are gonna be out here in 120° heat for 12 hours. Oh your supervisor saw it was Ramadan and the foreign national workers are gonna leave early so he split up the shifts in a way that allowed people to work only 4 hours a day and then get a break? No unacceptable you gotta work 12 hours minimum. Oh you guys have living arrangements that you enioy and feel comfortable with we are gonna move you around cuz i said so and idc because its not me that has to move. Literally his exact words he didnt care. There are a plethora of good reasons for people to join but i feel this college incentive and poor leadership leads to more people being depressed and suicidal. We focus on "extremism" but not poor work environments.
