Toughening your mind?

kakashe
Do you think you can learn to toughen your mind?. For example to where if you saw someone's murdered and skinned alive you wouldn't panic or feel deeply disturbed. Like you'll see in anime they witness something awful and one person will scream and go mental and the other will stand there watching and not afraid. So do you think Mabie meditation or something can make you tougher to the point where your soul can't be shaken and you can withstand any horror and go home at the end of the day the same.

Desensitizing yourself to horrific sights can be done. But that's not really the same as being mentally tough. First of all I see very little value in being the kind of person who isn't affected by that kind of sight unless you were looking for a career as law enforcement or in a related medical field. That or you want to be a sociopath/have been watching too much tv. To me at least, a tough minded person is one who can stand by conviction when it's tested. Someone who doesn't accept a frame or state that they do not approve of. Someone who when things get tough rather than pout or try and place blame seek to have a level head and resolve the issue. And most importantly does not cave into emotion and can look at a situation outside of their own ego for what it is. They can handle disappointment and doubt. Rather than seeking to be unaffected by it. Like the saying goes. It's not about not having fear, it's about overcoming it. Meditation can help, but I find it's better to have real life experience and the right attitude.

Good view points and your right life experience is key.

You could and I am sure it is easier for some and harder for others. I think the real question is what part of yourself are you willing to discard or lock away to obtain it. The thing you seek doesn't come without inherent consequences. Take for example the guy that got bored and decided to play sniper elite in Vegas... Does that disturb you? Should that disturb a person? Would a person be better off if they weren't bothered by this? These are the questions people have to decide for themselves. A right and wrong doesn't really exist so much as, there a natural consequence of taking on a certain mindset or way of thinking.

Hmm well to answer the question of would it disturb me if the guy wasn't affected. The answer would have to be yes and no because I think they are strong willed and unshakable but even someone like me who can handle the most extreme stuff still gets disturbed by how much I'm not affected. But that's just internet videos who knows how I would react in real life.

It really depends on how you interpret things, Perspective mostly, I've seen deaths and trauma completely bury and break people. It can go both ways, The key to strength is understanding yourself and your thoughts, aswell as understanding what exactly it is that makes you feel weak. Conceptually everything is perspective, I've survived quite abit of trauma, But I never once did consider myself a victim, So as such - I've become rather desensitized and generally happy in all. I don't look a life so bleakly, I understand how beautiful it is just to be able to breathe, think and feel both pain and love. Besides, I live my life for the one's in my past that can't. There is no definitive answer, mostly you find your perspective and make that your strength. But it all roots in understanding yourself before you understand others.
