Are male cosplayers at a disadvantage

ouma_adam
Are male cosplayers at a disadvantage for furthering their interest in cosplay at a higher level? As in your average recreational cosplayer who just does it for fun, but since they are investing more and more time into it, why not take it up a notch like hosting events as a promoter, entering cosplay contests, guest cosplaying at cons etc. and just taking your passion to a larger scale. For example, Jayem Sison widely known for his Gray Fullbuster cosplay definitely raised a lot of interest, a lot of his cosplays are awesome in general and he works hard for his passion, but even then i don't think he gets the support he deserves. Is there even a market for male cosplay? *Note: I'm not talking about cosplay being a full-time profession, just taking your enthusiasm for it to a higher extent, like in a sport theirs a house league and a competitive league.

i think so, since they cant put on make up to better match there character (well they can, but many wont)

Only disadvantage is that we can't look so clean and babyfaced as much as girls. A lotta guys are scruffier and rough (A lotta the anime guys look so "pretty"). But if you got the look you can make it work for sure. If by support...well, as the statistics even on a site like Maiotaku show, there's quite an offset on the male-to-female ratio...and I imagine guys don't check out other guys' cosplays as much. The opposite end o the spectrum: both girls and the guys check out the girls cosplays. Just how it is

@blissfullforce1818 that's awesome man, i'm sure your hard work will pay off. You're right, having a SO that shares your cosplay enthusiasm would be pretty cool, think of all the couple cosplays you can do then lol @Lamby and @dandaman You guys are right, i was thinking the same thing. A good majority of male anime characters tend to look really youthful/baby faced, it can be difficult for guys to match these characters. There's also quite a variety in terms of character build/physique, so i guess guys are limited in that way too, can't be too jacked if you wanna play a character from Free for example on the other hand you need a good build if you wanna play Goku, can't flip flop back and forth between different physical builds. I guess in terms of support, it would probably be hard to get noticed, you would really have to blow everyone out the water and be on your A-game with both physique and costume.

Nah man, there is definitely a market for male cosplayers and a look for all types. From your skinnier guys playing spiderman to the buff dudes who do DBZ or video game characters. But really you can cosplay as whoever you want. I went to Acen and saw a fat dude cosplay as bubbles from PPG. I had pure respect for that fat man. Follow your cosplay passion and fuck the haters.

I did my cosplay. No one knew what I was. I still did it because if my passion and love for the role I believed in. I usually see photographers going for girls. Welp. But non the less, power to you all.

At least we look better as characters with masks and helmets lol, it's not so bad. Looks more badass tho

Hmm, in response to those saying a lot of anime male characters look really youthful and whatnot, that can be solved with makeup to a degree. I'm not ashamed to say that for my first cosplay, I decided to use makeup because I was cosplaying Kagamine Len and wanted to look a bit younger. I don't have any pictures up of the cosplay anymore because I admittedly wasn't 100% satisfied with it. I didn't style the wig 100% to my liking, plus the makeup wasn't 100% because I was going for a more anime eyed look (was following a tutorial), but I definitely need some practice.

As for my opinion on the matter now, it does seem like female cosplayers see more success than male, kind of like how female models see more success than male. Not sure if that's just the market or less guys taking it seriously. v(´-ι_-`)v
