Anyone else have experience with sewing/pattern making/design? It's a lot of fun and I was just wondering if there were other otaku out there who like to save an extra dime on their cosplay by making it themself?

Not all my cosplays are made by me but the simple ones are. I will look over EBay for months trying to find the perfect pattern. Lol.

I'm about to sew my first one! I've made plushies before so I've got some experience with the needle, but I've never tried making an outfit. I'm a bit nervous ^^'

It's nothing to be scared of Tally. Your going to poke yourself a lot and possiably bleed on the fabric but that all comes with making the costume.

I tried my hand at making a Order-Sol cosplay and I did it almost entirely by myself. It was actually fun learning a new survival trade (sewing). I found out the best way to make a costume is to make a pattern. I used rolls of discounted Christmas wrapping that I got CHEAP on those after Christmas sales. Just flip it over and you got a huge white sheet to draw a pattern on! Plus there's some other cool sewing tricks I discovered like using rolls of fabric glue (looks like scotch tape) and ironed hems into place without using niddles. Does get a bit hard to sew through it but, with a sewing machine and a strong enough niddle, works great. Plus it adds more strength to the sewed pieces.

Nothing against sewing tape but I don't see how it is stroung enough. I trust a good ole sewing machine, nothing beats machine stitching. Granted I hate hooks and eyes, they are a pain to hand stitch and, if you don't do it right, make it look awful.

I recently picked up sowing patches onto my shirts and jackets.. Still learning.

Reminds me of that girl in here who'd sew on her skin as a coping mechanism

Oh I remember a whole thread here on that. People had sewn flowers and stars on their skin.
