Religion

Why do people think their own religion is the superior one, I just don't understand..All religions were man-made I don't understand why some people say the difference of Christianity and other religions is that Christianity was made by god and all others are man made. Like how the hell do you know it was made by god? Did you go talk to him one day and he told you ' oh yeah, btw everyone is kind of copying me after i made a religion for you guys so like all the other ones are just not the real ones okay? ' like wtf seriously SERIOUSLY. I'm so sick and tired of dealing with my religiously fanatic brother who continuously bothers me about religious stuff and is slowly making me HATE religion itself in any form. I never was tied down to any belief, I always believed the universe itself was the closest of what we humans can understand the concept of 'god' but my family always because they are born Christians or Catholics were always like THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD oh no your obviously lost if you don't believe in our lord and savior Jesus. No your wrong, I do believe in him and sure he may of been the son of god in other people's eyes but that doesn't mean other people like budda were not just as important as he was for other people. My stupid brother asks me this question cause hes an ignorant fuck, ' If buddah had anything to do with god why did jesus make all the miracles on earth and buddah did none? " LOL LIKE SERIOUSLY..I was like, I'm not even going to answer that cause it's just a waste of time trying to make you see from my point of view cause your just a fanatic. AND yes my brother is the type of person who believes Christianity and Catholicism and only that are the true religions and all other ones are false gods and false religions..And what pisses me off so much is he use to not be this way.. Until he met his girlfriend who is like some Chinese christian fanatic that left Buddhism I guess..So it makes me feel like I don't even know him anymore and it frustrates me.. Sigh...Maybe I'm just different but why is it wrong to believe in something that isn't a super populated religion, is it really wrong to just believe in my own beliefs..?

Why do people think that their religion is the superior one? Because in something as abstract and absolute(heheh) as a religion that is ruled by God(s), anything but considering their religion to be superior would basically be denouncing their God(s). Despite how I act, I'm actually extremely religious! I'm sorry I could not give a proper response to this topic. I do have a passion for religion, but I wasn't sure what we were supposed to discuss here. My religion does not have much lore incorporated to it. Its more so based on martial history and subjective thinking.

I find religion fascinating. I was raised in a very conservative Christian household, and I basically consider myself a Christian in the sense that I think Jesus was an exceptional person and he had some amazing ideas about life and how it is best lived, but I am also very skeptical about a great many things. Whether he was actually divine in nature in particular is up for some debate. For me personally, the fact that four different authors give an account of his life is interesting. The fact that most historical scholars also point to multiple accounts that have distinct discrepancies between them as a highly reliable metric for determining historical authenticity is quite thought-provoking as well. I don't know that I'll ever be fully on board with the idea of his divinity, but regardless, I believe he was a good man with a powerful message that I think is worth aspiring to. I certainly do not subscribe to the dogmatic approach of most churches however, and would even call it dangerous. I would also posit that any religion can be valid. In absence of incontravertible truth, no one can ever be said to have the one and only correct interpretation of the world. What I completely and totally disagree with is imposing your religion on others or using it as an excuse for hatred or violence. A civilized society will not stand for it.

I'm a Christian and Christians like your brother make me cringe...I definitely don't think there is any one "superior" religion. I actually got the chance to study Christianity in college and I would never profess that the bible is the "word of God", that's just nonsensical insanity. It's a collection of books chosen to be canon by a random group of men and has been altered and rewritten so many times that at this point, it can't be taken seriously. It's a good resource for Christians but so are other books from Abrahamic religions. Christianity is what called to me because I felt a connection to the philosophy of Jesus and have faith in the divine but that doesn't mean it's the only valid belief out there. I was raised in a Christian home but my parents rarely ever took me to church and didn't even have me baptized. They let me choose it on my own. On the rare occasion we do go to church, we go to an Episcopalian church because as Christians go, they're really laid back and, y'know, NOT crazy. I think the world would be so dull without my Muslim, Jewish, atheist, and pagan friends. It's always good to surround yourself with different perspectives.

I'm a Christian as well, and my views aren't too different from Shawnji's. When I was in the Middle East last year, my friends and I were accosted by a man on the street with questions for us, as we were clearly foreigners and he assumed American. The five of us are Scandinavian Christian, Greek Orthodox, Sri Lankan Muslim, Egyptian Muslim, and Polish atheist. He seemed bothered by the fact that the five of us could hold different beliefs and still be friends, but our different religions don't matter to us; we respect and celebrate each other's beliefs, and I love that it doesn't have to be a defining factor of a relationship with others. There are wonderful people of every belief and walk of life, as there are some bad representatives of every religion who, unfortunately, can give people the wrong impression of a religion or denomination as a whole.

Claim christianity? Remember, Jesus got called a drunkard and was questioned as to why he hung out with some tax collectors, plus one of his closest friends was once a prostitute. In other words, he didn't just hang around those who already believed as he did, but it was how he was that defined him. Act in a positive way and others will want to emulate you.

My older cousin went through the same thing with his uncles and mother/father (jehovas witnesses/catholic) They wouldn't let up, so he figured he'd go to church as many times as it took and have them kick him out for being distruptive. His family were so embarrassed by his actions they don't bother him anymore. Not that I recommend the way he did it. Interrupting people with deliberately misinterpretions in the Bible--think of the most childish adult arguing twisting people's words--it was crazy to watch.
