Getting In Shape

I just weighed myself for the first time in 2 years. I knew that I wasn't going to like what I saw as I've had to buy new pants long before that. It turns out I'm roughly 20 pounds overweight (give or take a few). Some people I seem to feel the need to say I look just fine when I inquire about weight loss. But I have a deep concern for my health. Diseases like diabetes terrify me for example. I have thought about trying to get back into shape for a while. It is tough trying to take steps change. So I was hoping everyone could share some tips on getting in shape and their stories about it, or just talk about your struggles too.

hmmm... firstly i wouldn't go overboard worrying about those health concerns. being a few extra pounds ain't gonna kill ya, but it's always good to start considering watching your weight if you feel like you gained. dun bite off more than you can chew, and just watch what you eat. you can pig out once in awhile, just not everyday (fast food everyday). try home cooked meals, or make them yourself drink lots of water, and make sure to eat some fruit and veggies here and there. you dun have to force yourself to eat strictly healthy, just add in stuff gradually like a salad or carrots to your diet. maybe eat an apple for a snack. (start small) it will take several weeks to see a difference, but going for walks here and there would help out a lot. maybe consider getting a pet and take them for a walk can work out better for you. if you're into trying something new, maybe give martial arts a try (study at home) or find a place in your area. that can help a lot, but the lessons are only as good as the teacher.

I love martial arts. I've considered going back to Tae Kwon Do. As I'm already a 2nd degree black belt but being as out of shape as I am the intense workouts would piss me off. They kind of put me off to begin with too. Maybe I'll try out a new martial art when I get money for lessons. I want to stop drinking soda completely... but I feel like it is literally the devil. Them and slushies. They taste SO good. Every time I've almost quit them I fall for their delicious temptation.

hehe you sound like my one friend when it comes to soda. he drinks a 36 pack in a day (he's still alive tho lol) so it's nothing one should worry bout excessively. just gotta start small to lay off it. well, i used to take martial arts lessons mainly teakwando and shodokan. i sparred with my one friend from my childhood and he was learning muay thai and boxing. dem elbows hurt like a... coughs we actually ended up hurting eachother in the past lol i still love teakwondo (Tae Kwon Do) but where i'm living at they're quite pricey and far from my house so i just practice at home but not often since i got a lot goin on atm. ^ ^ anyway, don't give up and as long as you don't stray from your path you can make things happen. anything's possible, so be creative if you dun have the money. i'm using an old mattress as a punching bag lol i can say that personally, i hate going outside because i dislike people looking at me when i'm trying to get back into shape. it may or may not be so easy, depending on how comfortable you are to put yourself out there (not care what people think) I get embarrassed running around the park and people looking at me >~<

if you know your medical history, actually have problems goin on with your heart/blood pressure or diabetes know your limits and don't push yourself too fast. drink plenty of water if you feel dehydrated during a workout. i have a heart condition, so i need to stop from time to time and catch my breath.

Muay Thai looks like hella fun. I dislike people in a sorta general way so I understand the feeling of not wanting eyes on you. Doing things like forms from Tae Kwon Do would be really weird. I want a punching bag though. Not just for exercise but because I have a temper that I need to burn off sometimes. Its better to hit an object than another person. Jogging might not be too terrible if I can get up early enough. Holy hell I don't think I could get to 36 cans. But I've had 3 44oz cups of slushy.

hmmm I feel ya there lol i'm generally an easygoing guy but occasionally things throw me off and i get the urge to punch something. i broke my hand punching a concrete wall (didn't realize it was a solid wall) haha since then I learned to control my urge and try to think things through maybe you need a combination of things to get you going? do different things every day that's more outgoing and active there's planet fitness which isn't too expensive. i had to pay bout 20 usd a month and they allow me to bring guests too.

I once hit a wall and hit the part where there's a 2x4 and a nail. Lucky it only left a bruise. But fuck concrete dude. OW! My dad bought me a gym membership for like a year and I was too lazy and didn't go. Convincing myself to go do something is half the battle. Like hey body we could go out and do shit. Then my mind finds very good reasons not to. Like the fact that exercising in theory is nice but getting to the point of burning calories sucks. Getting another person into the ordeal is an idea I like. That way no weaseling out of exercise. Are you out of shape too Nyan?

For newbies: 1. Define a realistic goal within a realistic time frame. 2. Follow a plan. (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/find-a-plan.html) 3. Discipline yourself to say "NO" to junk food, negativity and laziness. - It's going to take time and dedication to get what you want, do what you need to keep you self motivated. (example: I wake up reminding myself what I want and to get pumped up I would watch a motivational video to start my day) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Simple starter tips: a. Cut out all junk foods (Learn to say no, when you want it, push it away... Train yourself to remember that a chocolate bar or your favourite chips is unhealthy for you.) b. Drink 8 cups of water a day. c. Portion your meals relative to the amount that you need per day. (http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm) - Use the website and get an estimate of how much you approximately need to function daily. Remember, you will need to intake less than that amount by either slightly eating less or working out more to slowly burn it off. Don't try to meet the caloric amount through junk food, EAT HEALTHY MEALS! You need nutrition! NEVER EVER, I REPEAT NEVER, believe that you need to starve yourself to lose weight. It is a slow process but great things take time. TRUST THE PROCESS! d. You can start being more active by going on 30-60 mins walk each day. I usually go early in the morning to feel the cold windy air while I listening to mellow music. I find it extremely relaxing. I would walk around my neighborhood and make the most optimal paths to fit 60 mins of walking. Do it every day for a month and you'll see improvements, eventually you wanna start jogging and running! Disclaimer: This is just a suggestion through my personal experience, I'm not a health professional or a fitness trainer. - You can add me if you want an accountability partner to keep motivated!
