Dubbed anime songs

kairu_steve
I was watching a few episodes of Burst Angel today when I realized that Funimation used to dub songs for the shows they licensed (Kiddy Grade and Drgonball are the ones I noticed). I don't think they do it anymore (or at least not much a la Dragonball Kai for TV broadcasts) and I heard that it's based on whether fans want songs dubbed or not. Anyway, I was just wondering what anyone thinks of anime/Japanese songs being dubbed? Should they do this more of just leave the songs as they are?

I actually like when it is done. For the series Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad(An anime about these teenagers starting up a rock band) they dubbed over all of the songs in the show with the voice actors who actually play the characters. It came out way better than the original version of the songs which were done in "Engrish" by a band called the Beat Crusaders.

A couple weeks ago I needed something to watch at lunch since my supply from last years holidays finally ran out. So I wondered what anime hadn't I watched in years. I finally found Tenchi Universe in my binder of burned dvds. The quality is so bad on HD tv's. So I thought I never watched the subbed version of this series. Then the opening song came on and I couldn't help but wonder if it always sounded like that because it sure didn't seem familiar. And once the ending theme played I was sure something was going on with the songs. It took a few episodes for me to realize Pioneer had dubbed all those songs in English back in the 90's. Also, all those songs used in the 90's release of Sailormoon - pure gold.

I dont mind some of them but then on the other hand some of them are just god aweful. The first dubs I heard was probably yu yu hakusho, I liked theirs.

Yes, 4Kids Entertainment did it with their shows too. I can remember Tokyo Mew Mew's/Mew Mew Power's whole soundtrack was done in English with the dub version.
